For the first 48 hours post-surgery, patients must remain at bed rest. Although it is important to rest the first couple days, there must be some movement to keep blood circulation. With assistance, patients should walk around for about 10-15 minutes several times a day.

During this time the patient may feel fatigued and a bit uncomfortable, this is normal. Pain medication will be provided to help reduce pain levels. For about the first three weeks, there will be some restriction to certain movements and the patient may need help to perform household tasks. Stitches will be removed within those weeks. If the patient does not have a physically strenuous job, they may return after about three to four days. After just a few months, incisions should be healed and swelling should be reduced.

Depending on the patient and type of procedure, recovery may be faster or slower. Generally, the transumbilical technique has the quickest recovery time and least risk of complications. Patients must keep in mind that breast may continue to grow as years past or may get smaller with weight loss.
